Portsmouth centre-back set for surgery – 12 months on the sidelines expected

Portsmouth centre-back Jack Whatmough has told Portsmouth News that he is set for 12 months on the sidelines, as he prepares to undergo surgery on his knee.

Portsmouth centre-back Jack Whatmough has said that he is expected to be out of football for 12 months through a knee injury. He will be undergoing surgery on damaged articular cartilage in his left knee.

The injury occurred 29 minutes into Pompey’s 1-1 draw against Doncaster Rovers at the start of the month, and he has since missed draws against Plymouth Argyle, Southend United and Bristol Rovers.

Speaking to Portsmouth News, Whatmough discussed the thinking behind his decision to go under the knife, remaining positive and optimistic.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of different people and this surgery is the right option. I’ve had a lot of advice from people in the game and this is the best path to take.

“It’s going to be 12 months out, but I’ve got the right people around me. I never do it the easy way!”

In his absence, Portsmouth have been playing Christian Burgess at centre-back with fan favourite Matt Clarke.

Prior to the injury, the 22-year-old had missed just four League One games throughout the first half of the season. He has suffered two serious knee injuries before, keeping him out of action throughout 2015 and 2017, and now it is unlikely that he will play another game in 2019.

After breaking through the academy at Fratton Park, Whtamough has gone on to play 96 times in all competitions for the club, making his debut against Southend United in November 2013.
